Aging Class with Rabbi Arinna Shelby

Preparing For The Sunset Years

This three part series will provide practical information and discussion on the realities of advancing age and what we can do to get ready.

Session 1: Facing Mortality
Thursday, April 19, 7:00 PM

Most of us are going to face the frailty of old age and the lack of independence it brings. We can either experience a crisis or we can have a plan. In this session, we will discuss the limits of modern medicine and the importance of identifying what matters to us the most. Please read the book Being Mortal by Atul Gawande in preparation.

Session 2: Advance Directives Up Close And Personal
Thursday, April 26, 7:00 PM

What are the choices on the advance directive form and what do they really mean? Where does Jewish theology fit into the picture? This session will answer these questions and provide some perspective from different denominations within the Jewish spectrum.

Session 3: Where Will I Live And Who Will Take Care Of Me?
Thursday, May 3, 7:00 PM

When we are no longer able to live independently, what are the options? This session covers how we can age in place as well as the alphabet soup of senior living facilities. It also provides information on types of care providers and the costs of care.
