Hazak 55+: The Impact of Yiddish Theatre

Theater historian Morna Martell delivers a talk on Yiddish theater, which arrived in the United States in 1882, with the arrival of millions of Jewish people fleeing the poverty and pogroms of Russia, Poland and Romania. By the 1920’s there was a thriving Yiddish Theater District on New York’s Lower East Side, presenting Shakespeare, Ibsen, Shaw, original comedies, operettas, dramas, as well as vaudeville, musicals and burlesque, all in Yiddish.

Stay for Ileene's wonderful lunch after the talk for $5 per person.
