Description of Services
Traditional and Meditative Preliminary Services—Spiritual Warm Up
Wake up your mind and spirit either by chanting the traditional morning blessings and psalms, or with a meditative exploration of breath, intention and presence. Join us for either (or both) of these simultaneous spiritual warm-ups.
Main Service
Rabbi Mark Hyman and Cantor David Berger will conduct the main High Holidays services at American Martyrs Parish Hall. Families are welcome and encouraged to participate in this service together. Join our community as we chant the words of our ancestors and hear the beautiful melodies of the Days of Awe.
Tashlich
Join us for the ancient ritual of the symbolic casting away of our sins as a community. This year it is on the 2nd day of Rosh HaShanah, Friday, September 30th at 5 pm. We meet at the head of Manhattan Beach Pier. We throw morsels of bread into the ocean as a symbol of casting off the sins of the past year as we face the New Year with a clean spirit. Dress is casual. Following the service we will have Kabbalat Shabbat services at the beach on the pier.
Family Service - for children with their parents
Cantor Beth Garden and Diane Levitt will lead a creative worship service appropriate for young children and their families. This service will give families the opportunity to pray and learn together in a setting that is meaningful and appropriate for children. There are no age restrictions on Family Service attendance, but the service is geared to families with children below b’nai mitzvah age.
Junior Congregation - 4th-7th Grade
This service will include meaningful high holiday prayers, stories and activities, led by Amir Orbach, Ye’ela Rosenfeld and Marissa Sharpe. Students will be encouraged to participate in High Holiday reflection and worship.
Teen Service - 8th-12th Grade
Students will engage in a stimulating discussion session on the High Holidays themes related to teens, led by Marissa Sharpe.
Childcare for ages 2-5
Childcare is offered for your children ages 2-5 during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Services at American Martyrs Parish Hall. The charge for childcare is $30 per child for all High Holidays Services (flat rate).
We also offer babysitting during the Family Service for children ages 2–5 in the preschool rooms at CTJ at a flat rate of $15 per child for both services.
